    Welcome to Year 1

    My name is Miss Owen and I am your class teacher. Our classroom is a happy and positive place where we have lots of fun learning new things.      

    If you have any queries or concerns, please feel free to email the office at admin@saintmaryscongleton.co.uk and they will pass on the message.

    Additionally, weekly updates and any information will be posted on the Class Dojo stories.

    Phonics

    We use the 'Monster Phonics' programme for teaching Phonics and early reading. Parents are able to access this at home, and reinforce their learning between school and home. 

    In June, Year 1 children have a Phonics Screening check. To prepare them for this, we practise phonics daily and read lots of real/nonsense ('alien') words. Children are expected to read at home daily, in order to support their progress.

    Our class book for Autumn 1 is 'Meesha makes friends'. The children will learn how to combine words to make a sentence and where capital letters and full stops go to write a small diary entry.

    Our class book for Summer 2 is 'Katie in London'. The children will be learning how to use and in a sentence and how to use pronouns to write a non-chronological report.

     

     

    Maths

    This term we will be learning:

    Place value within 10

    Addition and subtraction within 10

    Place value to 20

    Addition and subtraction within 20

    Our units this term are 'Creation and Covenant' where we will be looking at how God created the world and 'Prophecy and Promise' where we will learn about the story of Jesus' birth.
