Reading Champions

St Mary’s Reading Champions

At St Mary’s, our Reading Champions are a team of enthusiastic pupils selected from years 2 to 6, who share a love of reading and help to spread that passion throughout the school! They work together to encourage everyone—from our youngest learners to our oldest pupils—to enjoy books and discover the magic of reading and storytelling.

Our Reading Champions aim to:

  • Boost a love of reading across the whole school.
  • Encourage reading for pleasure both in and out of the classroom.
  • Promote and care for their class reading areas and help others find great new books.
  • Support reading events, such as World Book Day, book fairs, stay and read, book-nics and author visits.
  • Celebrate reading achievements, sharing book reviews, recommendations, and reading awards.

Our Reading Champions have lots of exciting responsibilities, including:

  • Helping to create, organise and tidy the class reading areas and the outdoor reading area.
  • Choosing books for the class reading areas.
  • Recommending books to their classmates and each other.
  • Helping teachers plan fun reading activities and competitions.
  • Creating displays to showcase favourite authors and new arrivals.
