PE CURRICULUM STATEMENT
Intent:
At Saint Mary’s we recognise the importance PE plays in the curriculum and are committed to providing all children with opportunities to engage fully in Physical Education. The aim of our PE programme is to develop children's basic physical competencies, build confidence in their ability and build the foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. PE lessons encourage children to compete against themselves and others whilst being challenged to improve their physical, social, emotional and thinking skills. These skills are embedded in the heart of our planning.
Our objectives in the teaching of PE align with the National Curriculum in that we aim to ensure all pupils:
Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
Are physically active for sustained periods of time
Engage in competitive sports and activities
Lead healthy, active lives
Implementation:
Saint Mary’s uses the GetSet4PE approach to teaching PE, this focuses on the importance of developing sound fundamental movement skills alongside multi-ability skills such as personal and social skills enabling children to apply these skills to any game or activities. GetSet4PE ensures fundamental movement skills are developed progressively and uses clear steps of progression at every level. Saint Mary’s has a curriculum map which sets out when GetSet4PE units are covered, and which sports are introduced. Sports are taught during their season so that they can directly link to clubs and competitive opportunities. The language of ‘personal best’ is used so that all children can achieve in a lesson no matter what level of physical skills that they have. The PE curriculum is planned to cover the skills and knowledge/content themes from the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2 and the EYFS for the Foundation Stage. In the Early Years PE is taught through dance, gymnastics, and multi-skills. In Key Stage 1 children build on these skills and develop and apply them to games. In Key Stage 2 the core skills are developed and applied in games, gymnastics, and dance. Competence in swimming is covered in KS2. We are developing a sense of love for PE and sport throughout the school. There are a wide range of activities on offer for the children to experience with an opportunity to engage in new activities and develop their skills further. The PE curriculum is continually updated and developed to ensure it meets the new National Curriculum with extra opportunities for competitive sport.
Opportunities are provided for children to take part in a range of competitive, creative, and challenge-type activities, both as individuals and as part of a team or group, in this school and in a range of interschool competitions. We aim to embed core values such as fairness and respect and a love of PE and sport which they will maintain throughout their lives.
Organisation: PE is taught for 2 hours per week. The teachers use recent CPD in dance, athletics, games, and gymnastics to teach the children alongside the GetSet4PE scheme.
School Sports Premium: The School Sports Premium is used to improve the provision of PE at Saint Mary’s in a number of ways, adding additional specialist CPD to support teaching staff. The School Sports Premium has provided opportunities for PE and sport to be enhanced and developed giving opportunities for all to experience high quality PE and sport.
Extra-curricular: Saint Mary’s provides a range of after-school clubs. These provide opportunities for the children to participate in activities and develop their skills further.
Competition: All children have the opportunity to take part in competitive sport during their time at Saint Mary’s. We run competitions during PE lessons along with a ‘personal best challenge’ where everyone has the chance to beat their own scores. We partake in numerous competitions, leagues, and festivals against other schools via this partnership.
Pupil Voice: is used to inform future plans.
Assessment: Teachers use their professional judgement to observe children over the period of a term.
Impact:
By the end of KS2 children have built their skills in teamwork, paired work, and individual performance at Saint Marys.
They have experienced and participated in a wide range of sports and activities and have had the opportunity to attend a vast range of extracurricular clubs and represent the school in a variety of competitions.
