Welcome to Reception

I am Miss Small and I am the Reception teacher. The Reception classroom is a happy place where every child will feel safe, valued and loved. Through exploration and play, the children will develop their curiosity, confidence, and independence.  I am excited to be teaching your child this year! 

Mrs Luby will be supporting Reception this year. Miss Manley will be teaching Reception on a Monday afternoon.

What to bring to Reception each day:

• A waterproof coat
• Reading record, reading book and word boxes
• Named water bottle with water
• Weather appropriate clothing (cold weather - coat, gloves, hat; warm weather - sun hat, please apply sun cream at home)

To keep in Reception:

• Wellies
• Puddle suit

**Please make sure all items of clothing are clearly labelled**

Our Summer 2 topic will be toys and learning about the past. We will be learning through the following high-quality texts:

  • The Paper Dolls

We will be learning about different toys, toys from the past, and materials used to make toys. We will be learning about weather changes and Summertime. We will also be learning about and partaking in activities for the King’s Birthday, Father’s Day, World Music Day, and having  Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

Phonics

At Saint Mary's, we teaching Phonics using the scheme Monster Phonics. You and your child will become familiar with the monsters and the sounds they represent.

How Children Learn to Read with Monster Phonics

Monster Phonics is a proven systematic synthetic phonics approach, incorporating colour coding and character cues, making phonics both easier to understand and more memorable. Here’s how it works:

• Understanding Phonic Sounds: Children start by recognising and saying phonic sounds.
• Blending Sounds to Read: Children learn to blend these sounds to read words, gradually building fluency and confidence.
• Daily Practice and Progression: Children follow a structured lesson sequence, moving from simple sounds to more complex phonics patterns.

RE learning

At Saint Mary's, we teaching RE supported by the Diocesan Scheme, 'The Vine and The Branches'.

The Vine and The Branches is divided into six Branches.

1. Creation and Covenant
2. Prophecy and Promise
3. Galilee to Jerusalem
4. Desert to Garden
5. To the Ends of the Earth
6. Dialogue and Encounter

In Summer 2, we will be learning how Christians work together with people of different religions. We will learn that Jesus is our friend, all about different Saints, including Saint Peter and Saint Paul. We will also her who is a good neighbour and how we can be good neighbours.
