Fitness Testing

Rationale and Results

In 2016-17, all KS2 students completed half-termly fitness tests in order to monitor how students’ fitness levels changed throughout the year. Each time, the children completed 8 basic fitness tests which included: shuttle runs, star jumps, speed bounces, skipping, medicine ball lifts, press ups, sit ups and a standing stork. They had to complete as many repetitions as they could in 30 seconds. The children then wrote down how many they had produced. These tests were chosen as it was thought that they would give a decent overall understanding of a child’s fitness. This is because they included strength, balance, speed and agility tests. At the end of the tests each student’s scores were added up to give a total and the percentage improvement was then calculated.

At Saint Mary’s, we work hard to make sure that all groups of pupils make great progress in all aspects of the learning.  It is for this reason, that we have undertaken further analysis to make sure that vulnerable groups of children are making at least as good as progress as their peers.
